Producing: Carl Biehn

Carl Biehn is a powerhouse vocalist working across multiple Los Angeles music projects and freelancing for hire. In 2020, he collaborated with EDM producer Morgan Perry on Friends—a track they finished and released, but looking back, the mixing and mastering didn't age well. What felt current in 2020 had become trendy and dated. Morgan wanted to revisit it with a remix that would sound modern and timeless.

My approach was to let the track breathe. I pulled back competing elements to simplify the arrangement, focusing on a sub-style kick drum, fatter bass, and cleaner low-end foundation that could hit harder without stepping on each other.

The vocal treatment changed entirely. The original featured heavy tuning and layered effects that obscured what made Carl's voice compelling in the first place. His performance didn't need help—it needed space. I stripped away the processing, letting his lead vocal sit naturally and heartfelt against the electronic production. Backing vocals and ad-libs found their place in the mix without crowding. The rhythm section locked in tight, emphasizing the groove rather than fighting it.

After revisions, we landed on a final mix both Carl and Morgan were excited about—modern, clean, and hitting the sweet spot between polished production and raw vocal emotion. The remix feels timeless rather than trend-chasing, which was exactly what they were going for.
